Life Expectancy of FSGS with Dialysis

FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) is one of the causes of Nephrotic Syndrome, and it is usually detected among teenagers and children. FSGS is a kind of disease that the glomerular epithelial cells are damaged, people usually have diarrhea and upper respiratory infection before onset of FSGS.
No one can tell the life expectancy of FSGS patients on dialysis exactly, there are many factors are linked to the life expectancy of FSGS such as diet, nursing, complications as well as treatments and FSGS patients’ response to the treatments. In clinical, the common treatments for FSGS patients include low-sodium diet, ACEI and ARBs, steroids and immunosuppressive agents. However, about 50% of FSGS patients have poor response to these medicines and there still has lots of proteinuria, in that case, it takes about 5 years to develop Renal Failure and some cases may even within 2 years. It has been reported that half of FSGS patients with 24-h proteinuria 3-3.5g will develop Renal Failure within 6-8 years, while if proteinuria can be controlled into less than 3g, FSGS patients can remain normal conditions for 10 years. So it is very important for FSGS patients to control proteinuria. If ACEI does not work too much, patients can try Chinese herbal medicines.

When FSGS develops Renal Failure, dialysis, kidney transplant and Immunotherapy will be the treatment options. In general, the average life expectancy of FSGS patients on dialysis is 4.25 years and only 23% of dialysis patients can live for 10 years. Kidney transplant is regarded as the last choice for kidney disease patients, but for FSGS patients, kidney transplant may not be the best choice. About a half of FSGS cases will relapse after receiving a kidney transplant. Immunotherapy combines western medicines, Chinese herbal medicines and blood purification techniques together. Chinese herbal medicines help FSGS patients eliminate the immune complexes depositing on the glomerular epithelial cells through degradation, repair kidney damage and enhance kidney function through expanding blood vessels, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and proving nutrition for damaged kidneys and promoting DNA replication of damaged kidney tissues.
